How to get into the New York City Marathon

Non-guaranteed drawing

A random drawing for anyone without guaranteed entry; 2027 dates are to be announced. For 2026, applications ran 4-25 February and the draw was on 4 March 2026: 240,000+ applicants, about 1% accepted.

NYRR Member-Only Second-Chance Drawing

Eligible NYRR members who apply to the general drawing are entered automatically into a second members-only draw.

Time qualifier

Guaranteed entry for meeting the standard at an eligible 2026 NYRR half or full marathon (2027 standards for ages 18-34: men 2:53:00 marathon / 1:21:00 half; women 3:13:00 / 1:32:00). Non-NYRR full-marathon times get only a limited number of places, fastest first; for 2026 only the top 10% were accepted, which needed 22:52 under the standard.

9+1 program

NYRR members who run nine qualifying NYRR races and volunteer once in 2026 earn guaranteed entry for 2027. From the 2027 program (for the 2028 race), places are by a members-only 9+1 Pass drawing: enter 17-29 September 2026, draw on 1 October 2026, USD 99 if selected.

15+ finishes

Runners who have finished 15 or more New York City Marathons have guaranteed entry in future years.

Charity

Guaranteed entry by fundraising for an Official Charity Partner (670+ in 2026), NYRR Team for Kids or NYRR Team for Climate. 2027 partners will be announced in spring 2027.

International Tour Operators

People who are not full-time US residents can book a package with guaranteed entry from an official operator (100+ operators in 50 countries); 2027 operators will be announced in early 2027.

Other guaranteed routes

Also guaranteed: the 2026 Virtual TCS NYC Marathon (Guaranteed Entry tier), NYRR 5K/10K Philanthropic membership, and a valid 2026 cancellation.

Abbott WMM Race Draw

Runners with an Abbott WMM Runner Portal who meet the draw's completed-Majors requirement can enter a small draw; eligibility and results show in the portal.

The course

Runs through all five boroughs, starting on Staten Island at the foot of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, through Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, and finishing in Manhattan's Central Park. The 2026 race marks the 50th anniversary of the five-borough course.

Aid stations, the elevation profile, typical race-day weather and travel from your home are on the New York City Marathon race page.
