How to get into the London Marathon

Public ballot

Open to UK and international applicants. The 2027 ballot ran 24 April - 1 May 2026 and drew a record 1.33 million+ applicants; results were sent 9 July 2026 (fees: GBP 79.99 UK, GBP 275 international).

Good for Age (UK residents only)

For UK residents with a qualifying time; it lets you apply but does not guarantee a place. The 2026 standard for ages 18-39 was sub-2:52 (men) and sub-3:38 (women); 2027 details are due in autumn 2026.

Championship entry

For members of a UK athletics body. The 2026 standards were marathon sub-2:38 (men) or sub-3:10 (women), or half marathon sub-1:11:30 / sub-1:26:00 in limited cases; 2027 details are due in autumn 2026.

Charity place

Apply directly to one of the listed partner charities for a place and fundraise for them. Charities set their own fundraising targets.

International tour operators

Official overseas operators sell guaranteed entries with travel packages; Sports Tours International is the official operator for the USA, Ireland, France and some other territories.

British Athletics club entry

A separate allocation for affiliated UK running clubs, listed on the official entry pages.

Abbott WMM Race Draw

Runners with an Abbott WMM Runner Portal who meet the draw's completed-Majors requirement can enter a small draw; eligibility and results show in the portal.

The course

Starts on three lines in Greenwich that merge before mile 3 in Woolwich, then passes the Cutty Sark, Tower Bridge (around halfway), Canary Wharf and the Embankment before the final turn at Buckingham Palace onto The Mall. It is mostly flat, with a slight net downhill from miles 4-14 and a short incline before Tower Bridge.

Does the London Marathon count toward the Six Star medal?
Yes. It is one of the original six races behind the Six Star medal, with Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York. Sydney and Cape Town joined the Majors later and aren't part of that medal. The series' next milestone is the Nine Star medal.
