Chicago is the major people pick when they want a city marathon that still feels like a city. The course is a loop out of Grant Park, so the same hotel can cover the expo, the start, and the finish. The 2027 race is Sunday, October 10. The application window closes October 29, 2026. Dates are in lottery races: when each draw opens and closes.
What runners like
The course leaves downtown, runs north through Lincoln Park and the lakefront neighborhoods, comes back through the West Loop, then south through Pilsen, Chinatown, and Bronzeville before the last miles into Grant Park. The sidewalks stay full. The wind off the lake on the north miles is the part a flat-course plan forgets.
Mid-October is usually cool at the start. A jacket for the corral is normal. Bib pickup is in person. Build Saturday around the expo, not around a long walk.
Where to stay
The Loop, South Loop, and the east edge of the West Loop put the start and finish in walking range. Race-morning roads close, and rideshares stack up around Grant Park. Lincoln Park is fine for dinner and a worse Sunday if it depends on a car. More Illinois races are on the Illinois race calendar.
Food worth the stop
Deep dish is a Friday meal, or a Monday meal. It is a bad dinner the night before. Saturday is ordinary pasta. Ann Sather on the north side, an Italian beef, and a Chinatown noodle shop after the race are the meals visitors underestimate.
For the person not racing
Grant Park is both the start and the finish, so one spot covers both. A second viewing is realistic on the train, not in a car. Agree on a corner a few blocks west of the park. The chute is a bad meeting point.
