Berlin for Race Weekend

October 9, 2026 · 6 min read

A flat loop from the Brandenburg Gate, a city you can do by train, and a finish that is the start.

In this guide

Berlin is the major runners choose when they want a fast course and no car. The Generali Berlin Marathon starts and finishes on Straße des 17. Juni at the Brandenburg Gate. The 2027 race is Sunday, September 26. The lottery closes November 12, 2026. The window is in lottery races: when each draw opens and closes.

What runners like

The course is flat, wide, and a loop, so crew can see a runner more than once. Crowds swell on Karl-Marx-Allee, Kurfürstendamm, and at the Gate, and thin out on some park stretches. That quieter middle is where a lot of personal bests are saved. Late September is cool. A throwaway layer belongs in the bag. Bib pickup is in person.

Where to stay

Mitte, especially around Friedrichstrasse, is the practical base. The main runner entrance is a walk from many of those hotels. Kreuzberg is the better dinner neighborhood and a worse race morning. Race-day roads close for hours. A taxi to the start is the plan that fails. Buy a transit day ticket.

Food worth the stop

Currywurst is the snack, not the dinner. Saturday night should be pasta, rice, potatoes, or grilled chicken. Book any sit-down meal for Friday.

For the person not racing

Potsdamer Platz is the classic double viewing, because the course crosses there twice. The Gate is the finish and it fills early. Meet away from the chute.
