What runners like
The bridge is the moment and the trap. The crossing comes in the first few kilometers and includes the largest descent on the course. The bill arrives after 30 kilometers. The other stretch runners describe is the return under the bridge, then a late climb through the Royal Botanic Garden near 40 kilometers, then a downhill toward the Opera House. August is late winter in Australia: cool mornings and wind on the bridge.
Where to stay
The Rocks, Circular Quay, and the CBD put the finish in walking range. North Sydney is closer to the bridge and a ferry from the finish party. Check which side of the harbor the corral uses before booking. A ferry is a poor race-morning plan.
Food worth the stop
Save the harbor seafood for Sunday night. A heavy oyster dinner on Saturday is how a scenic course becomes a long one. One meal in The Rocks is enough. A second dinner in Surry Hills is the better meal.
For the person not racing
The bridge deck is not a spectator spot. The finish at the Opera House is the place to be, and it fills. Agree on a meeting point in the village, not by the steps.
