A taper is a reduction in training fatigue, not a complete shutdown. The best taper leaves your legs familiar with running while removing the accumulated tiredness that hides your fitness.
Reduce volume first
Cut distance over the final one to two weeks, especially the long run. Keep easy runs easy and avoid adding miles because a missed workout makes you nervous.
Keep a little rhythm
A short session with a few controlled efforts can preserve coordination and confidence. It should finish with plenty in reserve; the taper is not the time to prove peak fitness.
During race week
Prioritize sleep, normal meals, familiar shoes and a simple logistics plan. Extra rest cannot repair a training cycle, but it can prevent a good one from being spoiled by unnecessary stress.
