For the Honolulu Marathon, the useful hotel question is not simply “Which hotel is closest to the start?” The race starts near Ala Moana, finishes at Kapiolani Park, and the organizer’s limited courtesy shuttle leaves from the Honolulu Zoo in Waikiki. A hotel that looks convenient on a map can put you on the wrong side of your preferred race-morning plan. Compare eastern Waikiki near the finish, central Waikiki near the shuttle, and the Ala Moana side near the start.
Know the start, finish, and shuttle locations
For 2026, the start is Ala Moana Boulevard/Queen Street Extension at 5:00 a.m. Sunday, December 13; the finish is Kapiolani Park. The organizer lists complimentary shuttles from Honolulu Zoo to the start from 2:00–4:00 a.m., but warns capacity is limited and arrival is not guaranteed. It recommends walking or being dropped off where practical, boarding early, and not waiting for the last shuttle. Drop-off is at Atkinson Drive and Ala Moana Boulevard. Recheck official access instructions close to race day.
Choose an area by the trip you want to simplify
Eastern Waikiki / Kapiolani Park
Best fit if you value a shorter walk back after finishing or want to be near the Zoo shuttle. The exact hotel address matters: check the walk to both the shuttle and the start, since the organizer cautions that a hotel can be closer to the start than the pickup. Family can also reach the finish on foot, subject to race-day closures and controlled access.
Central Waikiki
A flexible base with dining and services nearby and the option to walk east toward the Zoo shuttle. Don’t assume central location guarantees a simple race-morning trip; map the actual hotel entrance to the pickup or start. The finish-to-hotel walk depends on your block and the permitted park exit.
Ala Moana / western Waikiki
Consider this side if being close to the start is your priority. Some hotels may make walking to the start simpler than going east to the shuttle. Plan your return from Kapiolani Park in advance: you may have a longer recovery walk, and road restrictions can make a short-looking rideshare trip unreliable. Don’t count on parking or a hotel shuttle unless confirmed by the property.
Organizer-listed hotel examples
The marathon’s hotel page lists OUTRIGGER properties and reports distances to the start and finish. These examples are not an independent ranking or an exhaustive list; treat distances as a first filter and verify the walking route.
- OUTRIGGER Waikiki Beach Resort: listed 2.2 miles to start, 0.6 miles to finish—a finish-side example.
- OUTRIGGER Waikiki Beachcomber: listed 2 miles to start, 0.5 miles to the Honolulu Zoo shuttle, and 0.8 miles to finish—a useful shuttle-versus-finish comparison.
- OUTRIGGER Waikiki Paradise: listed 2 miles to start and 0.8 miles to finish.
- OUTRIGGER Reef Waikiki Beach Resort: listed 1.8 miles to start and 1.1 miles to finish.
The organizer lists participant discount code MARATHON for these hotels. Check availability, blackout dates, cancellation terms, taxes and fees, and whether the code beats other refundable rates. Organizer distances may not reflect the race-day walking route.
Compare the total cost—not just the nightly rate
Include taxes, resort or destination fees, parking (only if you need a car), breakfast, kitchenette or mini-fridge, cancellation deadline, and the number of nights required. A refundable room near the finish may be worth more than a cheaper nonrefundable room farther away. Ask directly about early-morning food, luggage storage, late checkout, quiet-room options, and any marathon shuttle; don’t assume these are included. December is a busy travel period, so compare cancellable options early and recheck rates as plans firm up.
Plan the expo and packet pickup
The 2026 expo and mandatory packet pickup are at the Hawaii Convention Center, 1801 Kalakaua Avenue: Thursday Dec 10, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.; Friday Dec 11, 9 a.m.–7 p.m.; Saturday Dec 12, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Runners must collect their own bib in person; there is no race-day pickup. The organizer says the venue is walkable from most Waikiki areas and lists a free Waikiki Trolley loop to the expo during specified daytime hours. Convention Center parking is closed Thursday, opens Friday at 5:30 p.m., and is open Saturday all day. Check official hours before traveling.
Build a race-morning plan with a backup
- Decide whether you’ll walk, use the Zoo shuttle, or arrange a drop-off; don’t make the limited shuttle your only contingency.
- If taking the shuttle, map the hotel-to-Zoo walk and target an early departure within the published 2–4 a.m. window.
- If getting dropped off, follow the organizer’s time-specific instructions. Its 2026 directions change at 3:40 a.m.; don’t improvise from an old map.
- Do not plan to park at Ala Moana Shopping Center, Ward Center Theatre, Whole Foods, or restricted beach-park areas; the organizer prohibits or limits access there.
- Pack clothes the night before. There is no clothing check-in at the start; the official bag drop is at Kapiolani Park during a separate Saturday window.
Plan the return and your spectators’ route
Most Waikiki hotels are within walking distance of Kapiolani Park, according to the organizer. Treat the walk back as part of hotel selection: after finishing, you may be tired and carrying post-race items. Agree on a meeting point outside the congested finish area and review the official park exit. The organizer lists public-bus pickups near the park beginning around 9:30 a.m. and says some taxis may stage near the Zoo; verify availability rather than treating these as guaranteed transport. Spectators should plan separately because course closures and controlled access can make their route different from the runner’s.
Honolulu Marathon hotel FAQ
Is Waikiki a good place to stay?
For many visitors, yes: the finish is at Kapiolani Park, the limited shuttle leaves from the Honolulu Zoo, and the expo is walkable from much of Waikiki. The best block depends on whether you prioritize the finish walk, shuttle, or start.
Does the marathon provide hotel shuttles?
No hotel-to-start shuttles are listed by the organizer. It offers limited complimentary shuttles from Honolulu Zoo to the start from 2–4 a.m. and warns these cannot guarantee on-time arrival.
Can I pick up my bib on race morning?
No. The 2026 packet pickup is at the Hawaii Convention Center during expo hours, and each runner must collect their own bib before race day.
Runner suggestions
- Compare hotel-to-start and finish-to-hotel walks alongside prices; the return route may matter most.
- Save the official start, expo, and finish instructions offline and reconfirm them before travel.
- Bring familiar race-morning fuel rather than relying on unconfirmed hotel food service.
- Keep a realistic backup transport plan and agree on a spectator meeting point.
