The Austin Marathon isn't really a one-day event — it's built around a full weekend, and treating it that way makes for a much better trip than showing up Sunday morning and leaving right after the finish. Here's how the weekend typically unfolds, from the first shakeout run to the Monday-after recovery gatherings.

Friday: shakeout run and Expo day one

Race weekend traditionally opens with an official shakeout run, a short, social group run hosted by the marathon alongside local running stores and sponsors, meant to loosen up race-week legs rather than serve as a real workout. Later the same day, the Health & Fitness Expo opens at the Palmer Events Center — free and open to the public, with packet pickup, gear vendors, and a chance to meet the pacing teams who'll be out on course Sunday. If you're new to Austin, Friday afternoon is also a good window to get out and shake off travel with an easy run along Lady Bird Lake before the Expo crowds pick up.

Saturday: Expo day two and exploring Austin

The Expo runs a second day on Saturday, so if you missed packet pickup Friday, or just want a calmer visit, Saturday is the fallback. With the pickup logistics handled, Saturday is the best day to actually explore the city: a walk or easy shakeout jog around South Congress, a stop at Barton Springs, or a loop of the Lady Bird Lake trail all make for a good low-key day before race morning. Resist the urge to overdo it on your feet — save the sightseeing miles for after the race if you can.

Sunday: race day

Race day itself starts early, with the marathon, half marathon, and 5K all launching from the same downtown corner at Congress Avenue in staggered waves. Whichever distance you're running, plan to arrive with enough buffer for the rolling road closures that come with a downtown start. After you finish on Congress Avenue near the Capitol, the multi-block Finish Line Festival takes over the surrounding streets with live music, food trucks, and a beer garden — worth sticking around for even if you're not much of a post-race partier, since it's genuinely one of the better finish-line scenes among winter marathons.

Monday: recovery and the Presidents Day tradition

Because Austin Marathon weekend traditionally lands over Presidents Day weekend, race weekend often stretches into a bonus Monday off for a lot of runners — and Austin's running community has built a genuine tradition around it, with local breweries and running stores hosting informal recovery gatherings where finishers show up in their medals for discounted drinks and a chance to compare race stories. It's an unofficial extension of the weekend rather than an organized race event, but it's worth knowing about if you're debating whether to fly out Sunday night or stick around one more day.
