The Hoover Dam Marathon, Half, 10K, and 5K start and finish at Boulder Beach in Lake Mead National Recreation Area, roughly 18 miles southeast of Las Vegas. The course is a mix of paved trail and hard-packed dirt. Marathoners run an out-and-back style route twice; half marathoners do a single loop. The signature stretch follows the Historic Railroad Tunnel Trail (old 1930s tunnels built to haul materials for the dam), then switchbacks down to a loop on the upper parking level overlooking Hoover Dam itself before returning to Boulder Beach. The course does not cross the dam.

Timing and arrival

Marathon start is typically 8:00 a.m., half at 8:30 a.m., 10K around 8:40 a.m., and 5K at 8:45 a.m. Packet pickup is often available race morning at the Boulder Beach area (roughly 7:00–8:45 a.m.). Arrive early — the national recreation area entrance and limited parking fill quickly. Non-pass holders pay the standard Lake Mead entrance fee.

Parking and access

Park at Boulder Beach, right next to the start/finish. This is the simplest option for most spectators. National Park entrance fees apply if you do not have an annual pass. Valuables should stay locked out of sight. The area is compact enough that walking between the start, mid-course overlooks, and finish is feasible once you are inside.

Best places to stand

  • Boulder Beach start/finish — easiest base. Watch the gun, then move to catch runners on the return or at the finish.
  • Upper parking level overlooking the dam — the 'money shot' section where runners loop with Hoover Dam and the bypass bridge in view. Accessible via the switchbacks from the Railroad Trail; one of the most scenic spectator spots in any U.S. race.
  • Historic Railroad Trail sections — scenic tunnels and desert views. Better for spectators who are comfortable walking or have a bike; not ideal for quick car hops.
  • Return stretch on the River Mountains Loop Trail near the Lakeshore Road exit — late-course encouragement before the final push back to Boulder Beach.

Course character

Early miles are a gradual climb from the beach onto the paved trail. The middle features the tunnels and the dramatic descent/ascent on switchbacks to the dam overlook. Marathoners cover the loop twice, so fatigue is real on the second pass. Surface is mixed (about 14 miles of the full marathon on packed dirt). December mornings are usually cool (40s–50s°F) with clear desert light; wind can pick up.

Meeting after the finish

The finish is at the covered BBQ / picnic area at Boulder Beach. Agree on a landmark (picnic tables, a specific shade structure, or the far side of the chute) beforehand. Cell service is generally decent but can slow with crowds. Post-race food and awards happen on site.

Practical tips

  • Layers and sun protection — desert mornings are cool, then warm quickly; UV is strong.
  • Comfortable walking shoes if you plan to reach the dam overlook.
  • Cash or card for any entrance fee and snacks.
  • Check the official site or RunSignup page the week of the race for exact maps, fee updates, and schedule tweaks.

This is a smaller, scenic event rather than a mass city race. The combination of Lake Mead, the historic railroad trail, and the dam view makes it one of the more memorable mid-distance races to spectate in the Southwest.
