For the California International Marathon, a hotel is also a race-morning transportation decision. The 2026 race is Sunday, December 6, and the point-to-point course starts near Folsom and finishes in downtown Sacramento. Runners cannot drive themselves to the start or be dropped off there; the organizer says they must use an official start-line bus or runner drop-off shuttle. Spectators are not allowed in the Start Area. Pick lodging by the official bus zone you can reliably reach—and by how you want to get back after 26.2 miles.

The three partner-hotel zones—and who each suits

  • Downtown Sacramento (bus Location A): best if you want to be near the expo and finish, and value walking back to your room after the race. The organizer lists complimentary start buses from behind the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center. It is the finish-side choice, but its buses leave early.
  • Point West (Location B): a hotel-cluster option with organizer buses to the start and return transportation for partner-hotel guests after the race. It can work if you prefer a hotel campus away from downtown; confirm the exact property-to-bus arrangement rather than assuming every hotel on the map is served at its front door.
  • Folsom (Locations C/D): closer to the start region and potentially a shorter pre-race transfer, but it is still an official-bus trip, not permission to drive to the start. Partner-hotel guests are eligible for organizer return transportation from the finish area. Plan the post-race ride back before choosing this zone.

Bus cutoffs are firm—plan backward from them

The current race-transportation page says Location A buses leave by 4:30 a.m. sharp, with no bus guaranteed afterward; Location B leaves by 5:00 a.m. sharp; and Locations C/D run continuously from 5:00 to 5:30 a.m., again with no later bus guaranteed. The page also lists hotel-only pickup buses at select Point West and Folsom partner hotels. These are race-year logistics, not normal hotel shuttles. Check the current schedule and map, identify your exact stop, and work backward from its cutoff to your alarm, breakfast, walk, and any rideshare or parking plan.

A simple hotel decision test

  1. Open the official CIM lodging page and locate your exact hotel; identify its assigned start-bus zone and whether it has a hotel-only pickup.
  2. Open the official transportation map and confirm the precise boarding address, walk from the hotel, and departure cutoff.
  3. Decide how you will return from downtown after the race. Confirm whether your hotel is in the Point West/Folsom partner-return program and where the return bus loads.
  4. Compare the full weekend routine—not just nightly rate or distance to the start: expo access, race-morning reliability, post-finish travel, parking, meals, and whether your booking can change.
  5. Save the current lodging and bus pages offline and recheck them during race week.

Staying downtown: finish and expo convenience

The organizer’s downtown partner hotels are near the CIM Expo and finish and are assigned to start-bus Location A. The bus loading point is behind the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center near the West Lobby at K and 13th Streets; the official page says Location A buses leave by 4:30 a.m. sharp. That makes downtown attractive if you want to minimize the post-race trip and can manage the very early bus. If you drive, race transportation recommends reserving finish-side parking rather than assuming street or garage space will be available. Check the current parking instructions and closures.

Staying in Point West: match the hotel to its pickup

Point West partner hotels use Location B, at 1780 Tribute Road, and the current organizer page lists hotel-only pickups at the Hilton Sacramento Arden West and DoubleTree Sacramento. Location B buses leave by 5:00 a.m. sharp. The organizer says Point West partner-hotel guests can return by bus from the finish area. Do not assume a non-partner hotel nearby shares that service, and do not park at a bus site without checking permission: the race page says Point West parking is at your own risk.

Staying in Folsom: closer to the start, farther from the finish

Folsom partner hotels are linked to start-bus Locations C and D, with the transportation page listing departures between 5:00 and 5:30 a.m. and hotel-only pickup at Lake Natoma Inn. This can suit runners who want to sleep nearer the start region, but everyone still rides official transportation; the start roads have no vehicle access or spectator access. The organizer warns that parking at the Folsom shuttle locations is private and may lead to towing. Verify the right pickup location for your hotel and arrange the post-race return before booking.

Verify return buses from the finish

The organizer currently says Point West and Folsom partner-hotel guests have return buses from the finish. Its lodging page and race-transportation/finish pages do not show identical return loading details and hours. Treat return service as a real option, but confirm the latest curb, operating window, hotel eligibility, and whether space is available on the current official transportation page or directly with the hotel before you rely on it. If you need to leave at a precise time, keep a separate rideshare or parking plan.

Booking outside the partner list

The organizer advises securing non-partner lodging if partner rooms are unavailable; it also notes a hotel may have rooms outside its CIM block, with price and availability set by the hotel. A non-partner room does not automatically include a race bus. Before booking a vacation rental or hotel, map its route to the nearest official pickup and check Sunday-morning transit, rideshare availability, luggage rules, and return options. A property that looks close on a map may be a poor choice if reaching its bus requires a 4 a.m. transfer.

Remember the expo and packet pickup

The organizer’s FAQ says participants must pick up their bib, shirt, and participant bag at the CIM Expo; there is no race-day packet pickup. Check the official expo hours and location before choosing arrival dates. If you are flying in, leave room for delays and get your bib before race morning. The hotel with the easiest start bus is not necessarily the best choice if your arrival schedule makes expo pickup difficult.

If you are traveling with a spectator

The start is not a spectator destination: CIM says spectators are not allowed in the Start Area. Make the finish your shared reunion point instead. The organizer’s finish guide describes controlled entry, a designated runner reunion zone, and limited crossovers through the finish footprint; your hotel choice should account for how both of you will get there and back. Pick a precise meeting landmark before race morning, and have the spectator check current finish access and parking separately from the runner’s shuttle plan.

Before you confirm a CIM hotel

  • Partner property or not? Which exact official bus zone serves it?
  • What is the boarding address, walk, and last guaranteed departure for your zone?
  • Does the hotel have an official guest-only pickup, and what proof or reservation is required?
  • How will you get back from the finish, and are current return-bus instructions consistent across the official pages?
  • Can you reach the expo for required packet pickup, and what is your fallback if travel is delayed?
  • Have you saved current bus, start, finish, parking, and security maps?

Start with CIM’s partner lodging zones, race transportation and bus cutoffs, start-line rules, finish-area and reunion information, and general FAQ. The 2026 transportation details were checked October 16; recheck the organizer’s final maps and schedules before booking or traveling.
