The Brighton Marathon runs along the English south coast through Brighton and Hove. It is a flat-to-rolling road course that starts and finishes near Hove Lawns, with long stretches on the seafront. Spectators can see runners multiple times with relatively short moves between key points because of the out-and-back and coastal layout. The race draws large local crowds, especially on Madeira Drive and the final miles through Hove.

Getting there and moving around

Public transport is the practical choice. Brighton railway station is well connected, and buses run along the coast. Driving into the seafront area on race morning is restricted by road closures. Many spectators walk or use the frequent coastal buses between Madeira Drive, the Aquarium Junction area, Grand Avenue, and the finish at Hove Lawns.

Best places to stand

  • Madeira Drive (around miles 15–16) — Charity Cheer Avenue and high-energy music. One of the loudest official zones. Accessible viewing areas are marked.
  • Aquarium Junction — dense crowds and city energy as runners come through the middle miles.
  • Grand Avenue / Church Road stretch (miles 20–23) — Hove community cheering, often with local energy and occasional BBQ setups. Runners need the noise here.
  • Kingsway and Hove Promenade (miles 23–26) — final push past the beach huts. Very loud and a natural place to stay for the finish.
  • Hove Lawns finish — the traditional meeting area. Arrive early if you want a clear view of the line itself.

Accessible viewing

The organizers mark barrier-free accessible viewing areas with stewards. Known locations include Madeira Drive, Kingsway, and Grand Avenue. These also have nearby accessible toilets. One carer or supporter can accompany a wheelchair user.

Meeting after the finish

Hove Lawns is the standard post-race gathering spot. Agree on a specific landmark (a particular lawn, statue, or nearby café) because the area fills with finishers and families. Cell service can be congested right at the finish. Many people meet a short walk away on the promenade.

Practical tips

  • Layers and wind protection — the seafront can be cool and breezy even on sunny spring days.
  • Arrive early for popular spots like Madeira Drive if you want a front-row view.
  • Use the official spectator guide and app for live cheer-zone locations and any last-minute changes.
  • Local cafés and pubs along the route stay open and are good warm-up or recovery stops.

Brighton’s combination of seafront scenery, dense local cheering, and relatively easy movement between spots makes it one of the more spectator-friendly major UK marathons.
